On February 24, 2022, Russian forces invaded Ukraine, causing widespread destruction and triggering an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. Within the first year, roughly one-third of Ukraine’s population was displaced, with 8 million refugees outside Ukraine and 6 million internally displaced.
Historical Significance:
From the onset of the war, Russia aimed to demoralize Ukraine and its neighboring countries. However, the world witnessed over 100,000 Ukrainians transform into soldiers, forming the "Territorial Defense Forces" alongside military commanders. This civilian resistance played a crucial role in delaying and disrupting Russian operations.
Civilian IT specialists developed the ePPO app to warn of air raids, while others created "hedgehog" anti-tank barriers, Molotov cocktails, and other homemade defenses. Ukraine’s use of social media extended their message globally, countering relentless Russian propaganda and showcasing their resilience and innovation.
This resistance eroded Kremlin control and highlighted Ukrainian patriotism and determination to defend democracy. NATO and its members remain in awe of Ukraine’s adaptability and strategic responses throughout the conflict. The volunteers, or "Volonteri," will play a pivotal role in Ukraine’s postwar rebuilding and governance, demonstrating the power of collective civilian action against tyranny.
Taras Shevchenko’s powerful poem, “Keep fighting—you are sure to win! God helps you in your fight! For fame and freedom march with you, And right is on your side!” is finely etched along the entire perimeter of each commemorative coin.
