The Presidency of Joseph R. Biden: The First 100 Days

By Anthony F. Giannini

The first 100 days of any presidency are often viewed as a window into the priorities, challenges, and character of a leader. For Joseph R. Biden, the 46th President of the United States, this formative period represented both an opportunity and a crucible. Inheriting a nation deeply divided and grappling with the cascading effects of a global pandemic, economic uncertainty, and systemic injustices, President Biden faced unprecedented tests. Yet, these first 100 days also underscored his commitment to unity, progress, and the promise of democracy renewed.

This essay reflects on the early strides of the Biden presidency through the lens of historical context and artistic nuance, as only a historian and fine artist of the White House Gift Shop, established in 1946, might approach such a pivotal moment.

A Call to Unity

President Biden’s inaugural address set the tone for his administration—a clarion call for unity in a nation weary from discord. “We must end this uncivil war that pits red against blue, rural versus urban, conservative versus liberal,” he urged, striking a chord with Americans longing for peace and progress. His words, simple yet profound, signaled a departure from the turbulence of the recent past and a recalibration toward collaborative governance.

In these first 100 days, the Biden administration wasted no time translating rhetoric into action. Executive orders rejoining the Paris Climate Accord, reversing controversial travel bans, and prioritizing pandemic relief set the stage for swift policy pivots. Each action embodied the ethos of unity and pragmatic idealism that Biden had long championed.

The American Rescue Plan: A Lifeline for a Nation in Crisis

The administration’s cornerstone legislative achievement during this period was the enactment of the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan. Designed as a comprehensive response to the economic and public health crises wrought by COVID-19, this sweeping package included direct stimulus payments, enhanced unemployment benefits, aid for struggling businesses, and funding to bolster vaccination efforts.

This plan not only offered immediate relief but also reflected the administration’s overarching philosophy: a belief in government’s capacity to act decisively on behalf of its citizens. Within 100 days, Biden's vaccination strategy had surpassed initial expectations, with over 200 million shots administered. Such milestones illuminated his focus on restoring trust and efficacy in public institutions.

A Government of Diversity and Dignity

President Biden’s early days in office were marked by a deliberate effort to foster dignity and respect across the federal government. His appointments—spanning diverse racial, ethnic, gender, and professional backgrounds—signaled a commitment to representation. The historic nomination of Deb Haaland as Secretary of the Interior, making her the first Native American to hold a cabinet position, was emblematic of this vision.

Moreover, Biden sought to restore the sanctity of democratic institutions tarnished by partisan rancor. Through transparent communication and outreach initiatives, his administration worked to rebuild bridges with communities long sidelined by policymaking processes.

Challenges and Criticism: Navigating the Crosswinds of Governance

The path forward, however, was far from untroubled. Complexities surrounding immigration reform tested the administration’s resolve, as images of crowded border facilities sparked heated debate. Infrastructure negotiations loomed as another formidable challenge, with bipartisan support proving elusive despite widespread acknowledgment of the need for investment.

These issues underscored a central truth of governance: progress is seldom linear. Yet, Biden’s steady demeanor and emphasis on long-term solutions—rather than reactionary responses—offered a stark contrast to the volatility that had defined prior years.

Redefining Leadership in Times of Adversity

As we reflect on the dawn of the Biden presidency, the first 100 days present a tapestry of resilience, ambition, and an unwavering belief in the promise of America. They represent a leader’s resolve to tackle crises head-on while laying the groundwork for a more inclusive and sustainable future.

This period also redefined leadership in times of adversity. Biden’s approach—rooted in empathy, evidence, and engagement—offered a model of governance that seeks not just to wield power but to uplift the nation. While challenges remain, his first 100 days illuminate the enduring strength of democratic ideals and the profound impact of compassionate leadership.

In the final analysis, Joseph R. Biden’s early presidency serves as both a testament to the resilience of the American experiment and a reminder of the work still to be done. The story of his first 100 days is, ultimately, a story of renewal—a chapter in the ongoing narrative of a nation determined to move forward together.

The Fascinating History of the 'White Top' Helicopter

©2025 By A. F. Giannini

The use of helicopters for presidential transport began with the establishment of Marine Helicopter Squadron One (HMX-1) on December 1, 1947. However, it wasn’t until July 12, 1957, that President Dwight D. Eisenhower became the first sitting U.S. president to use a helicopter for official transport. The helicopter, commonly referred to as the "White Top" due to its distinctive white upper fuselage, was a Sikorsky UH-34 Seahorse, selected for its safety and efficiency. Eisenhower used the helicopter to travel from the White House to his summer retreat in Pennsylvania, marking the beginning of presidential helicopter transport as a regular feature of modern presidencies.

Since Eisenhower, every subsequent U.S. president has used the "White Top" as part of the HMX-1 squadron’s fleet, with updated models over the years. Presidents John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and Joe Biden have all flown aboard newer versions of the presidential helicopter, including the Sikorsky VH-3D Sea King and VH-60N "WhiteHawk." Each of these aircraft bore the same white and green livery that symbolized the high-security and prestige associated with presidential air transport.

The First Ladies of Liberty

Honoring First Lady Jill Biden & First Lady Olena Zelenska

Honoring the Courage of Jill Biden and Olena Zelenska

On May 8, 2022, amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, First Lady Dr. Jill Biden made a surprise visit to the war-torn nation, meeting with Ukrainian First Lady Olena Zelenska in the border town of Uzhhorod. This unannounced encounter, symbolically held on Mother’s Day, was more than a meeting of spouses; it was a powerful gesture of solidarity between two nations. The First Ladies discussed the resilience of their people and participated in crafting activities with displaced children, underscoring the importance of hope even in the darkest times. This historic event, now commemorated as "The First Ladies of Liberty," reminds the world that in the face of tyranny, unity and compassion remain our strongest defenses. In the words of Jill Biden, "The hearts of the American people stand with the people of Ukraine," a sentiment that echoes through this unforgettable moment in history.

Holy Days of Unity and Resilienc:

Christmas 2022 at the White House

Feast of Epiphany in Ukraine

History by Anthony Giannini

The 2022 Christmas celebration at the White House, themed "We the People," was a symbol of national unity, hope, and renewal in the face of challenges. First Lady Dr. Jill Biden curated an immersive experience that highlighted shared values, decorating the White House with 83,615 lights and 77 trees. Across the globe, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky and First Lady Olena Zelenska marked the Feast of Epiphany in the Mariinsky Palace. This solemn event embraced cultural traditions and underscored the resilience and spirit of a nation at war. Together, these celebrations showcased the steadfast bond between two nations striving for peace.

Parallel Celebrations of Unity and Resilience

In Washington, D.C., the halls of the White House glittered with warmth and joy as the Christmas spirit enveloped the residence in late December 2022. First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, alongside President Joe Biden, unveiled the theme for the year’s holiday festivities: “We the People.” This choice was not merely decorative but deeply symbolic, reflecting the administration's focus on unity, collective strength, and shared values amid a turbulent global climate. The Christmas tree, standing tall in the Blue Room, was adorned with mirrored ornaments, a tribute to fallen soldiers, symbolizing sacrifice and remembrance in the season of joy.

Meanwhile, halfway across the world, in Kyiv, Ukraine, the scene was one of solemn reverence as President Volodymyr Zelensky and First Lady Olena Zelenska observed the Feast of Epiphany at the Mariinsky Palace. January 6, 2023, held a special weight in Ukraine as the nation continued its fight for sovereignty in the face of Russian aggression. The event was a cultural cornerstone in Ukraine’s spiritual calendar, honoring the baptism of Christ, symbolizing renewal and divine protection. Despite the ongoing war, the Mariinsky Palace was filled with tradition and faith, reinforcing the Ukrainian people’s unwavering resolve and steadfast hope.

Both celebrations, though set thousands of miles apart, echoed with a shared message: resilience in the face of adversity. At the White House, the festivities were a vibrant declaration that unity and compassion would continue to guide the American people through turbulent times. Visitors marveled at the historic Neapolitan crèche, on display since 1967, and the intricate decorations that paid homage to America’s past while looking toward the future. The "We the People" theme resonated through each room, from the Gold Star Tree honoring military families to the Library, filled with books and symbols of hope.

In Kyiv, however, the air was more contemplative. Olena Zelenska stood beside her husband in quiet reflection during the Epiphany service, knowing that for many Ukrainians, faith and tradition had become sources of strength. As the religious hymns echoed through the grand halls of the Mariinsky Palace, the Zelenskys offered a powerful image of leadership bound by cultural identity and spiritual faith. It was a reminder that even amidst war, the bonds of community and tradition could not be broken.

The parallel celebrations reflected the unshakable friendship between the United States and Ukraine. The Bidens and Zelenskys, both enduring significant trials, led their nations through these iconic cultural moments with dignity and grace. Christmas at the White House and the Feast of Epiphany in Ukraine were more than just festive events; they were testaments to the enduring power of hope, faith, and the strength found in unity during times of uncertainty.

In both Washington and Kyiv, leaders and their people embraced the holidays as a time to reflect, renew, and look forward with optimism—a shared commitment that bridges continents and cultures in pursuit of peace.

“Remembering Queen Elizabeth II"
The Queen's Meetings With 13 U.S. Presidents

Commemorates Queen Elizabeth II and her life’s work over the course of seven decades as Queen of England. Queen Elizabeth II defined an era and spent time with 13 sitting U.S. Presidents. Her earliest meeting was with President Harry Truman on Halloween in 1951 while she was then, Princess Elizabeth. Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip stayed in many rooms of the White House over the years and took part in many types of activities including State Dinners, a visit to Arlington National Cemetery to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Solider, an American college football game, the planting of a commemorative tree on the South Lawn of the White House, a visit to the English settlement of Jamestown, Virginia on the 400th anniversary, amongst many more. These moments are symbolic and were meant to preserve friendship and shared national values. Policymaking was rarely discussed and typically reserved for conversations between the President and British prime ministers. The Queen led with grace and an unwavering commitment to duty. Through many meetings with U.S. Presidents Queen Elizabeth II always strove to deepen the bedrock Alliance between the United States and the United Kingdom.

Our Scarcity-Driven Pricing at The White House Gift Shop, Est. 1946

Edition Integrity. This edition was intentionally restricted to 1000 hand-made pieces in the USA. We design for meaning and keep the run small so art-design value and true scarcity value reinforce one another, exactly as serious collectors expect.

Why Our Prices Rise Over Time. We begin each limited edition at the lowest viable entry price to reward early supporters. As the edition sells down, the price steps up in transparent tiers that reflect diminishing supply. This preserves the long-term integrity of the work and keeps the market fair for early collectors and latecomers alike.

How We Define Status.

  • Available: More than 20 pieces remain—entry pricing may still be in effect.
  • Scarce: ≤ 20 pieces remain—price tier increases begin to accelerate.
  • Rare: ≤ 10 pieces remain—final tier pricing; when sold out, the edition is closed.

No Mass Production. Unlike large national runs produced by other institutions, our Signature Series editions are small-batch, hand-made, and never scaled up after launch. Once an edition closes, we do not remint the same design.

What Collectors Receive.

  • An authentic White House Gift Shop, Est. 1946 Limited Issue ornament
  • U.S. craftsmanship with hand-finished details
  • Certificate of Authenticity and edition documentation
  • Archival packaging appropriate for display and long-term care

If you’re viewing this page while inventory is marked Scarce or Rare, you’re seeing the final price tiers in effect. When the last pieces are acquired, the edition is permanently closed and will not be remade.

FAQ

Why not keep the price the same until sell-out?

Because static pricing in a dwindling edition encourages arbitrage and penalizes early supporters. Tiered pricing protects collectors and the integrity of the art.

Will there be a second run?

No. Signature Series editions are finite. When the edition is sold out, it’s closed.

How are tiers determined?

We use fixed inventory thresholds (not dynamic “surge” pricing). As published above, tiers advance as quantity drops to preserve fairness and clarity.
