Coin #5 Chronicling the Presidency of the United States

During his campaign trail, President Joe Biden promised to create the “most diverse cabinet” in American history. The administration is standing by their commitment to diversity and the advancement of civil rights. Going back the end of President Biden’s first 100 days there were 30 confirmed nominees. Compared to President Biden’s three predecessors, we can see a much higher proportion of women and non-whites.

In fact, some of the nominations are historic firsts: the first Black to be the Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin; the first Native American, Deb Haaland, to be a Cabinet member and Secretary of Interior; the first woman, Janet Yellen, to be Secretary of the Treasury; and the first Latino and immigrant to run the Department of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas. These trail-blazing appointments pave the way for future women and minorities to assume the helm in positions that were previously unattainable.

On Friday, February 25th, 2022 President Biden formally nominated Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court. On April 7th, 2022 the full US Senate voted 53047 in favor of confirming Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson's appointment to the Supreme Court. She is the first black woman to sit on the highest court in the nation.

“For too long, our government, our courts, haven't looked like America,” the President said. “I believe it's time that we have a court that reflects the full talents and greatness of our nation with a nominee of extraordinary qualifications, and that we inspire all young people to believe that they can one day serve their country at the highest level.” Biden said it was his "honor to introduce to the country a daughter of former public school teachers a proven consensus builder and an accomplished lawyer and distinguished jurist, on one of the nation's most prestigious courts."

Honoring First Lady Jill Biden & First Lady Olena Zelenska

Coin #8 honors the historic and courageous meeting between First Lady Jill Biden and First Lady Olena Zelenska on Mother's Day May 8th, 2022. As Russia presses its punishing war in the eastern regions, the first two ladies met in the city of Uzhhorod at a school that is currently sheltering families affected by the war. After their private meeting, the two first ladies made tissue-paper bears to give as Mother's Day gifts with a group of young children who live at the school.

"I wanted to come on Mother's Day," Biden told Zelenska. "I thought it was important to show the Ukrainian people that this war has to stop and this war has been brutal and that the people of the United States stand with the people of Ukraine."

This is the first time that the Ukrainian first lady has appeared in public since the war began. With a warm embrace First Lady Zelenska said, "We all feel your support and we all feel the leadership of the U.S. President. But we would like to note that Mother's Day is a very symbolic day for us because we also feel your love and support during such an important day."

More than 14 million Ukrainians have been displaced in Ukraine. Roughly 7 million have fled to neighboring countries.

This "Legends of Legislation" Commemorative Coin honors U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her visit to Ukraine, Taiwan, South Korea & Japan.

On May 1^st 2022:

Nancy Pelosi made an unannounced visit to Ukraine to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other top officials in Kyiv. This marked the first official congressional delegation to Ukraine since the Russian invasion began. At the capitol of Kyiv, Pelosi delivered an unmistakable message to the entire world: America stands firmly with Ukraine!

“Our commitment is to be there for you until the fight is done,” Pelosi told Zelenskyy during their meeting. President Zelenskyy awarded Nancy Pelosi with the Order of Princess Olga for a “significant personal contribution” to strengthening Ukrainian-American cooperation and “supporting sovereign, independent and democratic Ukraine”.

Later at a press conference in Rzeszow, Poland, Pelosi said the time she spent with the Ukrainian president was “a remarkable master class of leadership”.

Following her trip to Ukraine, U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi arrived in Taiwan on August 2^nd 2022, becoming the highest-ranking American official in over 25 years to visit the self-ruled island claimed by China. In a response to Pelosi’s visit, China quickly announced that it would conduct military maneuvers in retaliation for her presence.

Aboard a U.S. Air Force passenger jet, the speaker of the House was greeted on the tarmac at Taipei’s international airport by Taiwan’s foreign minister and other Taiwanese and American officials. Pelosi framed the trip as part of a broader mission at a time when “the world faces a choice between autocracy and democracy.” Her visit comes after she led a congressional delegation to the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv in the spring, and it serves as a capstone to her many years of promoting democracy abroad. Citing the commitment that the U.S. made to a democratic Taiwan under a 1979 law, Pelosi said, “ We must stand by Taiwan”.

“It is essential that America and our allies make clear that we never give in to autocrats,” she wrote. Pelosi has made criticism of China and support for Taiwan a key focus in her more than three decades in Congress. In remarks at a meeting with Tsai on Wednesday, she said, “Today the world faces a choice between democracy and autocracy.”

“America’s determination to preserve democracy, here in Taiwan and around the world, remains ironclad,” Pelosi said.

After Taiwan, the speaker of the House will visit South Korea and Japan, both major U.S. security partners in Asia.
