Chaucer is the poet who wrote one of the first and only existing poem linking love and passion to Valentine's Day. He wrote:

"For this was on St. Valentine's Day, when every bird cometh there to choose his mate."

He wrote his poem "Parlement of Foules" in 699 verses using iambic pentameter as his meter to connect Valentine's Day with love, passion, and romance.

The association of romance with Valentine's Day deepened over time within British culture. William Shakespeare wrote about both Saint Valentine's Day and love in his play, Hamlet (circa 1600-1601) with the phrase

"to be your Valentine"
