Honoring

President Joseph R. Biden

President Zelenskyy and Citizen Heroes of Ukraine

Honors the historic meeting between President Joseph R. Biden and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Ukraine’s Capitol on February 20th, 2023. Shrouded in secrecy, President Biden took a 10-hour train ride from the border of Poland to the Capitol of Ukraine to show his administration’s “unwavering support” nearly a year into Russia’s invasion. President Biden has made American support for Ukraine the centerpiece of his argument for a revitalized alliance in Europe.

On the steps of the Mariinsky Palace, standing by President Zelenskyy’s side, President Biden declared “One year later, Kyiv stands, and Ukraine stands. Democracy stands.”

Shortly after, President Biden and President Zelenskyy visited St. Michael’s monastery in downtown Kyiv. The two leaders walked along the Wall of Remembrance, with portraits of more than 4,500 soldiers who have died since Russia illegally annexed Crimea in 2014.

On the side of each coin the phrase “Slava Ukraine” is etched honoring, Tymofii Mykolayovych Shadura, a prisoner of war, who was brutally executed by Russian troops after saying “Glory to Ukraine.”

Historical Context of
President Biden's Historic Secret Visit to Ukraine:
A Defining Moment for U.S.-Ukraine Relations

by Anthony Giannini

On February 20, 2023, U.S. President Joseph Biden embarked on a momentous journey, making an unannounced visit to Kyiv, Ukraine—a decision that reverberated worldwide as a powerful statement of solidarity with the Ukrainian people. Arriving nearly one year after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Biden’s presence in Kyiv was more than a diplomatic gesture; it was an unyielding affirmation of the United States' commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty, democracy, and the unbreakable ties between the two nations. This trip marked a pivotal moment in U.S.-Ukraine relations, setting the tone for continued support in a battle that has redefined global alliances.

President Biden’s journey to Kyiv was an extraordinary logistical and security operation. Departing late at night from a military base outside Washington, D.C., he traveled under a cloak of secrecy, first flying into Poland, where he then boarded an overnight train to Kyiv. This route was chosen deliberately, for the rail journey offered maximum concealment and minimized exposure to the dangers posed by an active war zone. The decision to travel in this manner underscored the symbolic nature of the trip—braving conflict zones to show solidarity with a nation under siege.

Upon arrival in Kyiv, Biden was warmly greeted by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, an emblem of Ukrainian resilience and resolve. The two leaders engaged in substantive discussions that underscored the United States’ unwavering commitment to Ukraine’s fight for freedom. During these meetings, Biden announced a new tranche of military aid, comprising artillery ammunition, anti-armor systems, and air surveillance radars, specifically chosen to enhance Ukraine's defense capabilities. Additionally, Biden detailed plans for expanded sanctions targeting individuals and entities supporting Russia’s military campaign, signaling America’s determination to apply pressure on any party aiding Russian aggression.

The visit was marked by profound symbolism. As Biden and Zelenskyy walked through the streets of Kyiv, they were surrounded by historical and cultural landmarks, including the stately Mariinskyi Palace and the enduring St. Michael’s Cathedral. These locations, having withstood centuries of upheaval, served as poignant reminders of Kyiv’s strength and resilience. Their presence together against this iconic backdrop sent a message to the world: despite the hardships of war, Ukraine’s heritage and spirit remain intact.

The timing of Biden’s visit—just days before the first anniversary of the invasion—reinforced the United States’ dedication to Ukraine’s cause and amplified the significance of global unity against acts of unprovoked aggression. It also emphasized that this conflict is more than a territorial dispute; it is a battle for fundamental principles of sovereignty, human rights, and international order. Biden’s visit reinforced to the American people and global allies alike that Ukraine’s struggle is also a universal one, reflecting a defense of democratic values that transcend national borders.

In addition to its strategic implications, Biden’s visit was a personal gesture of empathy and moral leadership. By standing side-by-side with Zelenskyy in a war-torn city, Biden highlighted the United States’ historical role as a supporter of liberty and a protector of oppressed nations. His presence demonstrated the moral clarity that defines American foreign policy—a willingness to stand against tyranny and injustice, even when doing so carries great risk.

Ultimately, President Biden’s visit to Kyiv will be remembered as a historic moment in U.S. foreign policy. It underscored the resilience of the Ukrainian people, the strength of the U.S.-Ukraine alliance, and the enduring power of hope amidst hardship. This act of solidarity sent a powerful message that, in the fight for freedom and democracy, the United States will stand shoulder to shoulder with those who seek to defend their nations from oppression.
