The COVID-19 pandemic has shown Americans across this country just how much we depend upon essential workers. Doctors, nurses, scientists and front line workers help state, local, tribal, and industry partners as they tirelessly work to protect our communities. While ensuring continuity of function critical to public health and safety, infrastructure, economic, as well as national security, many of our families, first responders, doctors, nurses and essential workers have been affected by COVID-19.
As of July 10th, 2021, over 606,000 Americans have succumbed to the virus in the United States.
Until a vaccine is developed, wearing a face mask is our only front-line defense against COVID-19. The Center for Disease Control describes the use of masks as a simple barrier used to help prevent respiratory droplets from traveling into the air and onto other people when the person wearing the mask coughs, sneezes or talks. This recommendation is based on what we know about the role respiratory droplets play in the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19, paired with evidence from clinical and laboratory studies that shows masks reduce the spray of droplets when worn over the nose and mouth. COVID-19 spreads mainly among people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet), so the use of masks is particularly important in settings where people are close to each other or where social distancing is difficult to maintain. CDC’s recommendations for masks will be updated as new scientific evidence becomes available.
All people 2 years of age and older should wear a mask in public settings and when around people who don’t live in your household. This will help reduce the transmission and spread of COVID-19 in our families, loved ones, and communities. COVID-19 can be spread by people who do not have symptoms and do not know they are infected. This is why it’s particularly important for everyone to wear a mask in public settings and practice social distancing.
