Description

The beauty of this piece is perhaps in its calm and oval design, redolent not only of the Oval Office but of presidential and State Department diplomatic successes in American-Soviet relations during 1991 and 1992. The President George Herbert Walker Bush Oval Office Christmas and Holidays ornament was also made under the Bush Administration and is the second White House Gift Shop, Est. 1946 ornament to be placed on the White House and National Christmas Tree by an active member of U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division. In 2014 and 2015, the White House Gift Shop also had the honor to make custom gifts for presentation at a formal receptions in Texas to President George W. Bush. For decades, the White House Gift Shop has created custom pieces for former Presidents of the United States both Democratic, Republican, and Independent.

With its calm blues, browns, and golden hues, our 1992 Oval Office ornament reflects key diplomatic successes: Indeed, on January 26, Boris Yeltsin announced that Russia would stop targeting United States cities with nuclear weapons. The positive psychological effect of Yeltsin's announcement was mutual relief for all Americans and Russians who lived through the “duck and cover” days of the Cold War era (often dated from 1947 to 1991) during which MAD or Mutually Assured Destruction was the primary strategic deterrent to the threat of horrific nuclear war.

President George Herbert Walker Bush (born June 12, 1924) occupied the Oval Office when this ornament was created. President Bush served as the 41st President of the United States (1989–1993). A Republican, he had previously served as the 43rd Vice President of the United States (1981–1989), a congressman, an ambassador, and Director of Central Intelligence. He is the oldest former President and Vice President, and the last former President who is a veteran of World War II. Foreign policy drove the Bush presidency: military operations in Panama and the Persian Gulf; the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, and the Soviet Union dissolved two years later.

The President George Herbert Walker Bush Oval Office Commemorative is the second official White House Gift Shop ornament placed on the White House Christmas Tree by an active duty officer of the Uniformed Divsion of the United States Secret Service. The first ornament placed on the White House tree was the 1991 White House on the Eve of a New Century, 1899. Back then, the collection was known as the Secret Service Annual Ornament Collection which was retitled in 2013, seamlessly, as The White House Gift Shop Annual Ornament Collection.
