The Trump First Family Christmas Celebrations: A Legacy of Tradition and Innovation
By Anthony F. Giannini
The Christmas season at the White House has always been a time to reflect on the nation's values and traditions. Under President Donald J. Trump, the holiday celebrations took on a distinctive character, blending time-honored customs with bold new expressions of patriotism and unity.
In 2018, First Lady Melania Trump unveiled the theme "American Treasures," a tribute to the unique heritage of America. The White House was adorned with decorations that showcased the nation's landmarks, from the National Mall to the New York skyline, highlighting the splendors found across the United States. An 18-foot Fraser fir, decorated with blue velvet ribbon embroidered in gold with each state and territory, stood as the centerpiece in the Blue Room.
The following year, the theme "The Spirit of America" honored the traditions, customs, and history that make the nation great. The decorations celebrated the courageous individuals who have shaped the country and kept the American spirit alive. Floral emblems of every U.S. state and territory hung from the official Christmas tree, and architectural and design moldings representing some of America's greatest landmarks lined the walls of the East Colonnade.
In 2020, the theme "America the Beautiful" was introduced, celebrating the beauty and diversity of the nation. The Blue Room featured an 18-foot Fraser fir surrounded by yellow and gold lighting, with ornaments from students across the country depicting what makes their state beautiful. The State Dining Room showcased a gingerbread house resembling the White House, complete with the Rose Garden and First Ladies' Garden.
Throughout these years, the Trump family embraced the holiday season with warmth and grace, hosting events that brought together the American people to celebrate the spirit of Christmas. Their commitment to honoring the nation's heritage and traditions left an indelible mark on the White House's holiday legacy.
