History and Missions of The White House Gift Shop

In recognition of The White House Gift Shop's unique 70-year history of service and White House heritage — the United States Patent and Trademark Office granted federally registered exclusive and primary trademark protections for The White House Gift Shop® and The White House Gift Shop, Est. 1946® — absolute assurance of history, meaning, and value for your gifts or collectibles.

The White House Gift Shop was established on September 9, 1946 as the White House Flower and Police Fund. On November 1, 1950, White House Police Officer Leslie W. Coffelt was killed while defending President Truman from an assassination attempt at Blair House. Following the death and heroic actions of officer Coffelt, the missions of the gift shop expanded by permanent memorandum of
President Harry S. Truman with operational oversight by then Chief of Secret Service, James J. Rowley, U.S. Army General Harry Vaughan, Aide to President Truman, and the Inspector of Secret Service. Operational responsibility for the White House Gift Shop was given to members of the White House Police, now the Uniformed Division of Secret Service. The original White House Flower Fund became
the White House Security Fund which soon, thereafter, became the only original, official, and president ordered White House Gift Shop in White House history. Back then, the White House Gift Shop was tucked away in the basement of the White House, solely operated by Secret Service Uniformed Division officers, and later relocated to an area known as the old War Department. On January 1, 1998, the White House Gift Shop
opened this online store for public accessibility and convenience. Prior to 1998, our gifts were available only to Administration and Secret Service members inside the White House. Our first gift was a set of ink pens made for President Harry S. Truman to give to his White House guests.

You may be interested to know that here at the White House Gift Shop, our missions are funded the same way you fund your own projects at your home or business — through creative, honest, and hard work. No government funds or resources, direct or indirect, are ever used in the operations of the White House Gift Shop.

Our core goal at the White House Gift Shop, Est. 1946 is provide you and global Friends of America with exceptional Presidential, White House and Diplomatic gifts and collectibles while doing our best to do good for others.

For 70 years, it is the steadfast policy of the White House Gift Shop to honor Americans, those who serve or served in law enforcement, military service, provide direct assistance to law enforcement departments or agencies, and to honor the Executive Office of the President of the United States, a mission The White House Gift Shop has upheld, apolitically, during all administrations since 1946.

Today, the "only official original" White House Gift Shop® in history, actively supports Law Enforcement Agencies or Departments by directly funding advanced firearms training programs, on-site, for law enforcement officers as well as providing new arms (via our authorized FFL agent) for departments in smaller jurisdictions (typically up to 70 officers).

Officers who are trained to superior levels of rapid response thinking skills, situation management, and arms deployment are officers who are signigicantly better able to protect you, your community, and their own safety and lives.

For our veterans, since World War II and now — HIRE A VET is one of the best ways for your organization to bring proven leaders to your own business and one of the best corporate or small business staffing decisions you can make.
Our historic dedication is steadfast to helping those who serve and served in military and law enforcement, and we are always sensitive to critical new missions which now include direct support to educators and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS) via the medical research initiative of its Keystone Chapter. For more information and to help support NMSS visit nationalmssociety.org

While many of America's greatest thinkers, entrepreneurs, leaders, philanthropists, military leaders, and presidents arise from dire childhood circumstances — this tortuous path to greatness rarely occurs in the absence of at least one loving parent or caring teachers, ministers, mentors, effective educational programs, philanthropic entities, social role models, and a strong private sector to create new American jobs.

Thank you for your support of the only original official White House Gift Shop, Est. 1946.
