Locks of hair are apparent strands from Pres. Washington's Secretary, Tobias Lear.
Mr. Lear was responsible for distributing locks of the President's hair to relatives and important friends.
Receiving a lock of hair from the deceased was and still is a custom around the world in some cultures.
The connection between the deceased and the living is to bring energy and memories during the time of mourning.
Braiding of hair was customary in America, as braiding was a sign of respect. President Washington's Hair was braided, both in life and in death. Although the tradition of keeping a cutting of a loved one's hair died out in the last 18th century, it is still customary amongst very wealthy, famous families.
Unlike many men of President Washington's generation, he did not wear wigs. The thick hair seen on portraits, is his own hair.
America's most famous President is memorialized in this work of art and is most definitely a keepsake to be passed down from generation to generation.
