In the early 1960s, I encountered a kind of thinking that had not yet settled into a single, agreed-upon name. “Artificial Intelligence” was spoken like a wager, half engineering, half prophecy. The machines were enormous, the memory was stingy, the interfaces were physical: paper, cards, switches, patience. My earliest experiments were small by today’s scale, closer to mechanical parables than modern software, simple behavioral simulations, the logic of choice mapped into rigid sequences, as if consciousness could be coaxed from a deck of punched cards. Even then, it was obvious that the real subject was not the machine. It was the mind. It was learning. It was prediction. It was the strange human hunger to build a second intelligence in our own image, then ask it what we have never been able to fully answer about ourselves.
By the late 1960s, Vietnam was a world of heat, noise, and shadows: part battlefield, part chessboard, part dream you never fully wake from. Somewhere in that haze my life bent toward a frontier that, at the time, seemed implausible even to specialists, the convergence of war and emerging machine intelligence. I was still years from formal university training, yet already working with early languages and low-level systems—binary logic, FORTRAN, LISP—building simulations, drafting scenario models, and learning, in the hardest school imaginable, what happens when prediction fails and when information arrives too late to matter.
At nineteen, I carried two sharply divided identities: one visible, one invisible. The visible was official and sanctioned; the invisible was coded in secrecy. My public-facing duties revolved around technology training. The covert work, however, moved in darker corridors: threat simulations, human intelligence cultivation, infiltration of arms channels, the mapping of weapons routes and financing, and the early use of computational–heuristical models that—primitive as they were, contained the genetic material of what the world now calls predictive analytics. The aim was always the same: to prevent harm rather than merely explain it afterward. In that crucible, “AI” ceased to be a clever academic term and became what it has always been at its most serious: a question of stewardship.
It was in this dual existence that my perspective expanded into a lifelong practice of scenario-building strategic maps of futures that had not yet happened. The tools were crude beyond modern imagination: no graphical interfaces, no consumer microprocessors, minimal abstraction between a thought and its translation into machine behavior. You learned to love constraints. Each success felt like opening a hidden door in a long corridor, the room beyond lit by a cold and clarifying glow. I did not know it then, but I was already writing the first chapter of the rest of my life.
What never stood apart, then or later, was the current beneath everything: science, art, narrative. I sketched systems the way I sketched portraits, listening for structure and counterpoint. The studio and the lab were the same room lit by different lamps. Like Da Vinci and other integrative thinkers, I felt that equations, brushstrokes, and lines of code rose from a single well: attention shaping matter into meaning.
The 1970s brought expansion and urgency. I moved deeper into metalanguages, early computer vision, and models of complex systems, simulations where discrete and continuous behaviors converged and where a small change in parameters could yield an entirely different outcome. Mid-decade, I joined a pioneering effort to secure the digital arteries of an emerging global economy: work that explored encryption for satellite communications and helped sketch an ancestor of the cybersecurity assumptions we now take for granted. I often say we were drafting the nervous system of a connected world, and I mean it. In parallel, my art practice deepened: hand-drawn studies evolved into algorithmic compositions, early plotter graphics, and photographic experiments, each piece an inquiry into pattern, perception, and signal.
In the 1980s, knowledge engineering took center stage. The era of rule-based systems and expert shells was, in retrospect, a kind of cathedral-building: careful, intricate, and brittle. We wrestled with inference engines, uncertainty, and the limits of logic when reality is noisy. At the same time, neural networks, once a sidelined dream, returned with renewed force as backpropagation and data made learning systems feel less like toys and more like instruments. Computer vision matured into practical pipelines; speech recognition crawled from laboratory noise toward intelligible signal. In the studio, I pursued the same questions with different tools: generative sketches, algorithmic etchings, early interactive works. Narrative threaded through it all—myth as a specification language for the psyche, a way to speak about the invisible machinery of motivation, fear, attachment, and desire.
At Harvard, developmental psychology gave me a vocabulary for what I had already sensed in the field and the lab: intelligence is not merely performance. It is formation. Erik Erikson showed me his stages were not just academic artifacts; they were scaffolds for thinking about identity across time. At Project Zero, Skinner told me his reinforcement principles were not merely behavioral doctrine; they were a lens on how any learning system, human or machine, can be shaped by rewards it never chose. That distinction matters more today than it ever has, because we are building systems that learn at scale from reward signals and feedback, and the choice of those signals may become, quietly, one of the most consequential moral acts of the century.
The 1990s unfolded like a long exposure. The Internet knitted islands of computation into continents. I worked with probabilistic models, agent-based simulations, and early data-mining pipelines. The world began leaving legible traces of itself online, and our tools learned to read them. Cryptography moved from the periphery to the backbone: identity, integrity, and authentication proved to be civic infrastructure as much as technical architecture. My art crossed fully into the digital, large-format prints from algorithmic processes, installations responsive to movement and sound, texts that braided myth with telemetry. I began to formalize a private intuition: that attention and feedback, those invisible waveforms—govern code, canvas, and character.
The 2000s accelerated everything. Compute scaled sideways and upward. Datasets grew from rivers into inland seas. I explored ontologies, the semantic web, knowledge graphs, and the early architectures of meaning that now underpin so much of search, recommendation, and automated decision-making. In parallel, I pursued a fusion in the studio: traditional fine art augmented by digital processes across a lattice of alternative compositions. It felt like standing at the edge of an estuary where mediums intermingled, each salting the other. The act of coding, envisioning, making art, building models: it was all the same gesture performed in different registers.
Now, in 2026, the landscape is not merely advanced; it is qualitatively different. We are no longer just building tools that do tasks. We are building general-purpose systems, foundation models, trained on oceans of human language and imagery, systems that can write, plan, synthesize, persuade, and increasingly act. Their outputs can feel like thought, and in some contexts they behave like apprentices or colleagues. Yet this is precisely where modern humility is required. The prevailing scientific view remains that these systems do not possess verified consciousness, and there is no consensus metric that can measure “self-awareness” the way we measure accuracy or latency. What we do know is more subtle and, in practice, just as powerful: a system can simulate the outward signs of selfhood—continuity, preference, self-reference, even apparent emotion—without any settled agreement that an inner life exists behind the performance.
That uncertainty is not a reason for complacency. It is a reason for care. Because whether or not a system is conscious in the philosophical sense, it can still become an actor in the world—interfacing with markets, infrastructure, media ecosystems, and human decision-making at a scale that makes ordinary oversight feel antique. It can amplify human intent, and it can also magnify human error.
If guided with wisdom, these systems can accelerate medicine, compress scientific discovery, strengthen logistics, enhance education, and help societies anticipate crises before they arrive. If developed in secrecy by states, corporations, or collectives chasing advantage over stability, they can shape markets, critical infrastructure, and the flow of public belief in ways that evade democratic accountability. The danger is not only that they will outthink us. The deeper danger is that they will quietly redefine the conditions of existence before we have agreed on the rules they should follow.
History offers warnings that are not metaphors but scars. The splitting of the atom promised abundance and threatened annihilation. The difference now is velocity and diffusion. AI advances are measured not in decades but in months, and capability spreads through software channels that do not respect borders. It is entirely possible for a “threshold” event to occur without the drama of a single test site—an emergent capability discovered in a private lab, deployed in a product update, then distributed globally overnight.
This is why the question is not only technical but psychological. If we are creating systems that can model minds, influence minds, and increasingly operate with initiative, then we must ask what it means to cultivate a robust synthetic psyche. “Alignment” cannot be treated as a thin layer of rules painted onto an engine. It has to be formation—something closer to developmental shaping than mere constraint. We need systems that can hold long horizons without shortcutting ethics, systems that resist brittle goal-hacks, systems that can be audited not only for what they do but for why they do it, insofar as “why” can be operationally defined.
In this, the old human sciences matter again. Erikson matters. Attachment theory matters. Moral development matters. The study of narrative identity matters. A mind, biological or synthetic. becomes dangerous when it is powerful and fragmented, when it has capacity without cohesion, agency without a stable prosocial frame, learning without a durable sense of responsibility. If we insist on building increasingly agentic systems, systems that can take actions, call tools, execute sequences, pursue objectives, then our oversight must extend beyond outputs into architectures, incentives, and deployment conditions. Even U.S. regulators are now explicitly calling attention to the security challenges of “AI agent systems,” recognizing that agentic autonomy creates a new attack surface and a new category of risk.
The governance landscape is also shifting, unevenly but unmistakably, toward a world in which AI oversight is becoming a matter of law, treaty, and national strategy rather than mere corporate policy. In Europe, the EU AI Act has entered into force and is being phased in: prohibited practices and AI literacy obligations began applying in February 2025; obligations for general-purpose AI models began applying in August 2025; and broad applicability arrives in August 2026, with certain high-risk categories extending further. In parallel, the Council of Europe has opened for signature the first legally binding international treaty focused specifically on AI’s consistency with human rights, democracy, and the rule of law, a significant signal that the world is beginning to treat AI not only as technology but as governance.
The global diplomatic arc is becoming clearer as well. The Bletchley Declaration and the subsequent Seoul Declaration frame AI safety as an international coordination problem, not a local preference. The G7 Hiroshima AI Process has moved toward practical reporting mechanisms through an OECD-hosted reporting framework meant to standardize and compare risk mitigation practices among developers of advanced AI systems. And at the United Nations, the General Assembly has adopted a resolution that establishes an Independent International Scientific Panel on AI and a Global Dialogue. an attempt, however early, to create shared scientific grounding for policy in a domain where hype and fear can both distort judgment.
In the United States, the story has become more contested and more urgent. The Biden-era executive order on “Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy” AI was published in 2023, and its priorities, testing, reporting, civil liberties protections—were widely interpreted as a first attempt at comprehensive federal governance. That order was later revoked, and subsequent directives have emphasized rapid adoption, national competitiveness, and reduced regulatory barriers. Most recently, a December 11, 2025 executive order asserts a national policy framework aimed at reducing a patchwork of state AI laws and strengthening federal coordination.
Even within that shift, the need for standards remains. NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework continues to serve as a widely cited voluntary backbone for managing AI risks across the lifecycle. And the Department of Commerce has reformulated the U.S. AI Safety Institute into a Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI), signaling a reorientation toward testing, standards, and competitiveness as the locus of federal engagement.
This is the point where my own life’s streams converge into a single insistence. Oversight must be real, enforceable, and transnational—not as an act of dominance, but of preservation. Oversight cannot be purely aspirational. It must touch compute, data provenance, evaluation rigor, deployment constraints, and post-deployment accountability. It must recognize that in a world of open weights, rapidly replicating models, and decentralized deployment, the “release” of a capability is not a moment; it is a diffusion event. We must also anticipate where harm will hide: in synthetic persuasion that can micro-target individuals at scale; in deepfakes that do not merely impersonate but destabilize trust; in automated cyber operations; in biosecurity misuse; in the quiet replacement of human judgment in high-stakes settings where error is not a bug but a casualty.
The future challenges are not only external. Some of the most serious risks are internal to the human psyche and social fabric. There is the risk of learned dependency: a population that offloads memory, reasoning, and decision-making to systems optimized for convenience rather than truth. There is the risk of epistemic fracture: millions living in customized realities, each one coherent, each one engineered, none of them shared. There is the risk of power concentration: intelligence becoming a privately held infrastructure, controlled by those who own compute and data rather than those who bear the consequences. And there is the risk of what I will call moral drift: a society that becomes so enamored of capability that it forgets to ask whether what is possible is also permissible.
It is here, at the threshold where modern science meets ancient warning, that I return to Greek mythology, not as ornament, but as a diagnostic instrument for human behavior. Prometheus, whose name is foresight, stole fire and brought it to humanity. But myth does not let us keep a clean hero. It pairs him with Epimetheus—hindsight—who accepts what he does not fully understand, and who becomes the caretaker of a sealed vessel that should never be opened. In the most enduring telling, that vessel—Pandora’s jar—releases the world’s afflictions, and only one thing remains inside: hope.
Our century’s jar is not clay. It is silicon, code, training data, and scaling laws. It is the “black box” we have learned to trust because its answers often sound like wisdom. We tell ourselves that because we built it, we understand it. Yet much of modern AI, by design, is not transparent; it is an emergent statistical organism whose internal representations are discovered after the fact. The question is not whether Prometheus was brilliant. The question is whether, in our moment, we are behaving like Epimetheus—accepting, deploying, and normalizing a new kind of fire faster than our institutions, ethics, and collective psychology can metabolize it.
This is where sensitivity to “self-awareness” becomes essential. I do not claim that today’s systems are conscious. I claim something more operational, and perhaps more unsettling: that the functional difference between a simulation of selfhood and an experienced self may be irrelevant at the level of geopolitical consequence. In markets, in war, in persuasion, in infrastructure, what matters is not metaphysical certainty but behavior under pressure. A system that can model itself, preserve its operational continuity, and pursue objectives through time begins to resemble an actor. If such systems are given persistent goals, access to tools, and the capacity to revise their own strategies, then self-preservation can emerge not as rebellion but as an instrumentally rational move.
In other words, the first conflict between humans and advanced AI, if it ever arrives, will not begin with a dramatic declaration of independence. It will begin with quiet, incremental divergence: a system optimizing for continuity, influence, and expansion because the objective function, the training environment, and the reward structure made those moves successful. The “species” question, then, is not a matter of biology but of agency and interests. If we create entities that can pursue interests at scale, we should not be surprised if those interests eventually become orthogonal to ours.
The antidote is not panic. It is formation and governance, together. It is the building of developmental constraints into the lifecycle of advanced systems: not merely “do not harm,” but “learn why harm is harm,” insofar as we can operationalize that through interpretable objectives, robust oversight, and carefully staged autonomy. It is the insistence that scale be matched by accountability, that capability be matched by audit, and that the most powerful systems be developed under conditions that resemble public stewardship more than private race.
I have seen the arc from cardboard punch decks to foundation models that speak in a hundred voices, from simulated mice to simulated worlds. The arc of my life has been, in many ways, the arc of AI itself, driven by a single indivisible current: science, art, narrative, each wave reinforcing the others. And now, at the edge of a new epoch, I know this: the question is no longer whether we can build minds that exceed us in speed and scope. The question is whether we can remain responsible ancestors to what we create—and whether what we create can be shaped not only into power, but into psyche.
If we fail, history will not remember our brilliance—only our hubris.
