Starfish are beautiful animals that can be a variety of colors, shapes and sizes, although all resemble a star. While some appear smooth, they all have spines covering their upper surface and a soft underside. Starfish belong to the large group of marine animals called Phylum Echinodermata. That means they are related to sand dollars, sea urchins, and sea cucumbers. They can be found in all oceans of the world and the largest populations of starfish live in the Indian and Pacific oceans. There are more than 2000 species of starfish and not single one can survive in the freshwater and can live up to 35 years in the wild. Starfish are also known as sea stars and most starfish are about 5 to 10 inches, and can weigh 11 lbs. A common feature for all starfish is that their body is radially symmetrical. That means that their body can be divided in five equal pieces (even if they have more than five arms).
