Description   United States Constitution Mug from the White House Gift Shop Delegates from all the states except Rhode Island met at the Constitutional Convention of 1787 to create a plan for a more centralized type of government and to revise the Articles of Confederation. The delegates reached a compromise combining ideas from the Virginia Plan and the New Jersey Plan and the Constitution was drafted based upon this plan. The thirty-nine delegates to the Constitutional Convention met on September 17, 1787 for the last time to sign the document they had created. The Constitution is preserved for the public at the National Archives in Washington, DC.
