As a backstory, the core design concepts for Giannini focused on space, shape, proprotions, ratios for this quintessentially democractic flag pin, for which Giannini took inspiration from Plato's Republic and ancient geometers. A few months later, Giannini extended this same concept to his design of a small jewel-like crest flag pin, deriving added visual inspiration for the crest flag pin from wallpaper patterns at the White House.
