The White House, East Room, 2002 Christmas & Holidays Ornament, Globally Prized Collection, Handmade in the USA, 24-KT Gold Finished, Baked Enamels, Heirloom Quality for Generations

The East Room was designed to serve as the Public Audience Room. Abigail Adams used the room to hang her laundry to dry. The East Room was also used by President Lincoln to house union troops during the Civil War. But it was President Teddy Roosevelt who added some unusual activities to the East room including a wrestling march to entertain some 50 to 60 guests. The room was also used by President Roosevelt's children for roller-skating. Seven presidents have lain in state in the East Room including President John F. Kennedy. Today, the East Room is used for bill-signing ceremonies, entertainment that follows a state dinner, and for the President to host various groups visiting the White House. The East Room also displays the portrait of President George Washington painted by Gilbert Stuart. It is the only object known to have remained in the White House since 1800 -- This is the painting Dolly Madison received when the British burned the White House during the War of 1812.
