Description

President Barack Obama: "Ray Bradbury's gift for storytelling reshaped our culture and expanded our world."

Ray Bradbury was a very special friend of the White House Gift Shop and a literary mentor of our Executive Director/CEO, Giannini. Enchanted by ideas, possibilities, toys, and collectibles, Ray Bradbury was the recipient of the 2000 National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, the 2004 National Medal of Arts, and the 2007 Pulitzer Prize Special Citation. Ray died on June 5, 2012, at the age of 91. Ray's career spanned more than seventy years and inspired generations of readers of all ages to play, think, dream, roll in tall summer grasses, envision possible new worlds, and create. His works include hundreds of short stories, nearly fifty books, numerous poems, essays, operas, plays, teleplays, and screenplays. Ray Bradbury was one of the most celebrated writers of our time. His groundbreaking works include Fahrenheit 451, The Martian Chronicles, The Illustrated Man, Dandelion Wine, and Something Wicked This Way Comes. Ray was also a special person who enjoyed the art of collection as well as gift giving and knew that a pure gift is a core expression of what it means to be human.
