Easter is an important holiday for many people across the United States. As the spring holiday nears, many households display decorations that include decorative Easter eggs, and the White House is no different. The White House hosts an annual event each year to celebrate Easter with thousands of attendees on the White House South Lawn. The Official White House Gift Shop is proud to carry commemorative Easter Eggs for 2014 and years past for collectors to remember the celebration.

The Easter Egg Roll at the White House

The White House Egg Roll is a tradition that is held on the White House lawn every Easter Monday. The roll is a special egg race for children, where they push their eggs along the lawn with a long spoon. The event also features speeches and appearances from government representatives and entertainment celebrities.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE WHITE HOUSE EASTER EGG ROLL

The original site of the Easter Monday Egg Roll was the grounds of the United States Capitol. By the mid-1870s, the egg rolling activities on the West Terraces had gained notoriety as the children turned the Capitol grounds into their Easter Monday playground. The first egg rolls, largely family affairs, seem to have been held during the administration of President Andrew Johnson. Youngsters of the President's family dyed eggs on Sunday for the Monday rolling, which the First Lady would watch from the South Portico. The workers and tourists watched in fascination as the children rolled both their hard boiled eggs and themselves down the lush green hills.

The egg roll activity of 1876 took its toll on the grounds, a fact that did not go unnoticed by members of Congress. With an already inadequate budget to complete the landscaping and maintenance of the grounds, Congress passed a law forbidding the Capitol grounds to be used as a children's playground. The law was to be enforced in 1877. But that Easter Monday rain poured down, canceling any outdoor activities sending the egg rollers indoors to play.

On Easter Saturday of 1878, a small announcement in the local press informed the egg rollers the new law would be enforced. President Rutherford B. Hayes, taking his daily walk, was approached by a number of young egg rollers who inquired about the possibilities of egg rolling on the South Lawn of the White House. President Hayes, upon his return to the White House, issued an official order that should any children arrive to egg roll on Easter Monday, they were to be allowed to do so. That Monday, as children were being turned away from the Capitol grounds, word quickly spread to go to the White House!

President Hayes and his wife, Lucy, officially opened the White House grounds to the children of the area for egg rolling that Easter Monday. Successive Presidents continued the tradition, and the event has been held on the South Lawn ever since.

Truman's Balcony Ornament dimensions: 3x 2.5 inches

It would be far more architecturally correct to have a balcony up here! -- President Harry S. Truman

2014 WHITE HOUSE GIFT SHOP ANNUAL ORNAMENT: TRUMAN’S BALCONY

The 2014 White House Gift Shop’s official annual ornament honors President Harry S. Truman, thirty-third president of the United States from 1945-1953. Truman came from modest beginnings, grew up on the family farm in Independence, Missouri, and did not attend college. After high school, he worked as a time keeper, clerk, bookkeeper, farmer, then joined the National Guard. When World War I erupted, Truman volunteered for duty. Truman’s organization and leadership skills were soon recognized, and he was quickly promoted to captain in France. Despite his often shy and modest temperament, Truman captured the respect and admiration of his men, leading them successfully through heavy fighting during the Meuse-Argonne campaign. Among Truman’s accomplishments as President were ending World War II, containment of the conflict in Korea, initiating the Berlin Airlift, creation of his Fair Deal, banning racial discrimination in federal hiring practices, and desegregation of the military. Truman was not afraid of contentious or unpopular causes, one of the core traits of presidential leadership.

HISTORY OF PRESIDENT TRUMAN'S CREATION OF THE WHITE HOUSE SOUTH BALCONY

“It would be far more architecturally correct to have a balcony up here!”

President Truman spoke these words during the week of February 1946 and subsequently forged ahead to make the first change to the White House since 1872-- the replacement of the canvas canopies on the south face of the White House with the now iconic South Balcony of the White House. Truman's proposal for a balcony sparked outrage and debate in America about the mutilation of the White House. Critics abounded at Truman’s proposal to change the White House face, the first exterior change of the White House in 117 years. Members of the Commission of Fine Arts argued that the Classic Greek style of the White House would be mutilated simply to create a leisure space for the First Family. It got worse: Political cartoonists satirized the balcony project, claiming that Truman could lose the 1948 presidential election because of his proposed degradation of the White House. The Fine Arts Commission eventually agreed to the proposed balcony but only if the change was approved by the renowned architect William Adams Delano. The Commission believed that Delano would never approve Truman’s balcony. Truman argued that the addition of a balcony would provide shade for the first floor portico, avoid the need for new awnings, and would balance the south face of the White House. While Truman’s reasons were logical and aesthetically accurate, he had personal reasons for wanting a south side balcony: The view from the Oval Room was magnificent but more importantly, Truman hoped that his wife, Bess, would spend more time at the White House given a South Balcony with such a splendid view.

In small acts of vision and leadership amidst resistance, the vision and acumen is often revealed of a President or future president. Despite opposition from the Fine Arts Commission and funding from Congress uncertain, Truman forged ahead with the construction of the now quintessential South Balcony of the White House. Well known for his position that the Buck Stops with the President and given the resistance from Congress, Truman made no request to Congress for the $16,050.74 cost of constructing the South Balcony, for he paid for the balcony from his own household account. Once completed, many of those who vigorously opposed Truman’s Balcony quickly wrote to the President to say that the new balcony substantially improved the south face of the White House.

2014 White House Historical Association Christmas Ornament, Honors President Warren G. Harding

The 2014 White House Christmas ornament honors the administration of Warren G. Harding, who served as the twenty-ninth president of the United States from 1921 to 1923. As a young boy, Harding dreamed of being a locomotive engineer—a wish that was to come true for 51 minutes when as president, he took over the controls on the Alaskan railroad during the “Voyage of Understanding,” his famous transcontinental speaking and sightseeing tour. The Presidential Special, the train that carried President Harding west at the outset of his ambitious voyage and that would tragically carry his casket back east following his sudden death, just two months later...

The 2015 White House Easter Egg is meticulously hand-blown in the USA by American glass artisans using centuries-old methods, hand-crafting each glass egg one at a time, simultaneous with creating the now iconic White House Gift Shop annual classic Easter egg within egg design to symbolize Resurrection and Rebirth. The 2014 Easter Egg is deeply and masterfully etched in 24KT gold with the White House in architectural view.

Thus, no two eggs are ever alike in size or pattern or hues which makes each and every egg unique for your special collection, display, and Christmas or Easter 2015 gift giving. This year, our director, Giannini, chose a special hue of aquamarine for the White House Egg: A confluence of clears and blues and subtle nuances of green. The word aquamarine means Waters of the Sea, redolent of the Waters described in Genesis as well as suggestive of sea and sky (firmaments above and below) and rebirth (green, the perennial colors of spring and life, eternal).

The symbolism of the egg is as ancient as the earliest human societies with the archetype of the primordial egg as the center of the origin of the universe emerging from the original and divinely created Egg. This 2015 Easter egg is s beautiful heirloom created to last for generations.
